BLACKFOOT, IDAHO – The Potato Growers of Idaho (PGI) in collaboration with other key individuals have organized an important workshop to cover various topics of critical interest to the potato growing community.

The purpose of the workshop is to address current issues and challenges related to the potato cyst nematode (PCN), and EPA’s proposed label changes for Vapam and other important fumigants. Six workshops will be held across the state beginning June 20th in Boise and will conclude June 26th in Blackfoot.

The workshop will help growers understand EPA’s proposed recommendations to mitigate potential harm to bystanders of fumigant operations even though over 20,000 fumigation applications have been made in the last eight years and only 10 incidents have been reported to the state.

“As a whole, we have a tremendously safe track record,” said Keith Esplin, PGI Executive Director. “If there are reasonable changes that need to be made, we won’t oppose them. We just want to make sure growers have an opportunity to provide their input before any changes are made.”

Because these changes will drastically affect how growers will be able to fumigate, EPA is requesting input from growers. The workshop will provide a forum to learn the issues and give growers step-by-step instructions how comments to EPA can be submitted. Growers can receive two pesticide applicator recertification credits for attending the workshop.

“Because food safety concerns are not the reason for these proposed changes, EPA will be more willing to take into account the economic realities and feasibility issues before making any final decisions,” said Esplin. “If growers are proactive, learn the issues, and submit their comments, I believe EPA will seriously consider some of their recommendations.”

The PCN portion of the workshop will be equally as important for all growers in Idaho. Survey requirements for the entire state will be discussed along with future plans to hopefully free Idaho of the current regulations and pest. PGI has also invited federal and state officials to talk about preventative measure that can be used to protect farms from PCN and other invasive pests.

The PCN portion of the workshop is made possible through PGI’s one-year partnership with the USDA Risk Management Agency. The following is a schedule of the workshops:
