BLACKFOOT, Idaho — As part of the University of Idaho’s 39th Annual Potato Conference in Pocatello, Jan. 16-18, 2007, the Potato Growers of Idaho (PGI) have invited Dr. John Marshall, a leading nematologist from New Zealand, to participate in this year’s conference to provide important information about potato cyst nematode (PCN) management and possible eradication methods. Dr. Marshall will be one of the keynote speakers, Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at 9:15 a.m. and will participate in various workshops throughout the conference.

PGI’s one-year partnership with the USDA Risk Management Agency has allowed the grass roots grower organization to bring leading potato cyst nematode experts to Idaho. Dr. Marshall came to Idaho last year in November during PGI’s annual meeting, and provided much-needed information about PCN biology and management strategies that have already been developed overseas. Through his previous visit and his ongoing interest in Idaho’s PCN situation, Dr. Marshall has gained a better understanding of Idaho’s current circumstances, and will provide risk management education specific to Idaho growers’ needs.

“Containing and eventually eradicating PCN is an important priority for the Idaho potato industry,” said Keith Esplin, PGI’s executive director. “While PCN poses no human health concerns, we recognize the economic burden it places on growers and the potential yield losses that could result if it is not managed properly.”

“Dr. Marshall will provide growers with important best management practices to help contain the spread of PCN while the industry works towards finding responsible eradication methods,” added Esplin.

PGI has worked closely with the University of Idaho to address key issues impacting potato growers during this year’s conference. In addition to PCN, PGI has also used its partnership with the USDA Risk Management Agency to invite Dr. Mark Pavek, a potato researcher from Washington State University, to inform growers about the various cultural practices that can be implemented to combat the Potato Tuber moth.

In addition to Dr. Marshall and Dr. Pavek, local experts from the University of Idaho and USDA will be participating in the conference.

The conference’s seminars and workshops will be held at the Pond Student Union Building on the campus of Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. For registration information or more details, please contact the University of Idaho at (208) 529-8376.
