BLACKFOOT, ID — Potato Growers of Idaho (PGI) is pleased to announce the addition of Daiko Abe as their communications director. Abe will assist PGI in writing and editing. He will also participate in meetings and represent grower interests throughout the state. Abe will work three to four months as an intern, after which his position will be evaluated and may become permanent.

“Daiko was one of the top graduating students in his department. He has the skills, talents, and personality to fit in well with the potato industry,” said Keith Esplin, the executive director of PGI. “I look forward to working with him.”

Abe recently earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University-Idaho in communications with an emphasis in public relations. Previous experience include working for Idaho Senator Larry Craig in Washington D.C. as his press intern. While working on Capitol Hill, Abe gained first-hand experience in writing, media relations and gained further understanding of the legislative process.

Abe will assist in several key issues including tuber moth, property taxes, immigration bills, farm bill hearings, and others that will need to be addressed promptly over the next few months. In addition to his duties with PGI, Abe will also help Esplin in managing the communication responsibilities for United Fresh Potato Growers of America and United Fresh Potato Growers of Idaho.

“It is exciting to be part of an organization that represents potato growers here in Idaho,” Abe says. “I hope to identify with the growers and will do my best to represent them and their needs.”

Abe plans to relocate to Shelley, Idaho and will work in the Blackfoot office.
